A Woman is No Man by Etaf Rum

A Woman Is No Man by Etaf Run is a very sad tale of three generations of Muslim women and the severe oppression they lived under. It explored in depth the devastating reality of being born a female in a culture of systemic abuse where women are not only not valued but are alive for one purpose only- to give birth to sons. The opportunity arose to compare the cultural perspective presented in the book against our own culture where women, mostly, have a voice and opportunity to live meaningful lives. Historically women have experienced significant oppression which was turned around by God through Jesus. Jesus went completely against every norm and every expectation by giving a voice and a place to women. As a result we, as Christian women, experience a freedom many women around the world, including our country, do not get to experience. It also brought to light the importance of extending grace and love to women we cross paths with in life because we do not know what their life experiences have been and simply in showing kindness it is “showing Christ” to them so they may get a glimpse into the love and freedom that can come from Him alone.
